To keep strong and mobile, anyone over 65 can now join an age appropriate Wellness Class in Drummoyne.
Held each week during the school term, physiotherapists from Anglicare come to St Bede’s Anglican Church in Drummoyne, set up an exercise circuit, and provide each person with the individual assessment and encouragement that they need.
“This is a great way for the older members of our community to stay healthy and it’s been a delight to see all the personalities emerge as people move through the circuit, which now even includes boxing,” says Adele Henty, St Bede’s Coordinator.
“The exercise class is a great way to connect with the older members of our community,” says Mrs Henty. “And the morning tea after the class affords the opportunity to relax, chat and share a laugh.”
The Wellness Class is one of several ways that St Bede’s is helping Drummoyne locals build relationships with others in their community.
Every second week, the exercise class overlaps with Anglicare’s Mobile Community Pantry, which provides discounted groceries to anyone in need.
St Bede’s has been building a hub of midweek activities over the past two years, to provide connection points for community members. In addition to the exercise class and Pantry, they’ve held four clothing swaps and recently hosted a Pop-up Craft Market. There’s also a fledgling table tennis group, and a small Bible study group.
These activities are designed to provide a variety of connection points people in Drummoyne, says Mrs Henty.
“Feeling lonely and disconnected from our neighbours or community can be difficult, and our mid-week activities can help forge friendships that can sustain and support us longer term, and ease some of the pressure we face in our daily lives,” says Mrs Henty.
